Mastering Private Messages
Private messages have become a big part of the forums for many users. We’ve increased the amount of private messages you can store from 200 to 1,000 due to the demand.

Most people just send and receive private messages, but many of the features go unnoticed. In this article we’ll work our way around the private messages to show you all the features you might not have known where available.

Log into the forums.

Click on the private messages button

What you’ll see is the main page for the private messages. It shows you the latest messages you’ve received, as well as how many messages are in your inbox.

Looking at the picture above, let’s work our way down and see what’s available.

Banning
Click on the “BANNING” link across the top. A popup window will come up which shows the people that are on your ban list. Let’s say someone is private messaging you and you no longer wish to receive any private messages from them. Just add in their username and click on the “Ignore User” button.

As an example I put my coworker Neil on the ignore list. I will no longer receive any private messages from the user “Neil”. To remove someone from the list click on the red X icon next to the user you wish to remove.

Buddy List
A buddy list is a list of people who you frequently private message. Click on the “BUDDY LIST” link and popup will come up showing you who you’ve added to your list. I currently don’t have anyone so I will add Neil and Imogene. Just enter in the username and hit “add”. This will add the person to your “buddy list”.

You can always click on the buddy list link and select the person you wish to message by clicking on their name. This will allow you to send them a private message. Not only that, after you’ve put someone on your buddy list along the left-hand side it will show you list. This allows for quick access to your buddy’s. If you don’t see the list press the F5 key on your keyboard to refresh the screen.

The yellow light bulb means the person is on the forums now.

Export Private Messages
If you’re looking to save all your private messages you can use this feature to do so. Click on the “EXPORT PRIVATE MESSAGES” link to open up the exporter:

Just click on the “export” button which will create a long list of all your private messages. You can print this list or copy and paste it to Microsoft Word to save, it’s up to you.

Finding messages you’ve sent
The initial screen for the private message section shows you messages you’ve received, but what about messages you’ve sent? To view them just click on the drop-down message box and select “sent”.

To get back to your inbox just select “Inbox” from the drop down.

Private message user history
Let’s say you wanted to find all the private messages from a buddy of yours that has a username that begins with the word “M”. You can click on “M” (as shown below) and it will show you all users who you have messaged or have messaged you.

It tells you their username, when they were last online and the amount of messages you’ve had with them.

This are many of the hidden gems that lay within the private messages area, I hope you’ve find some of them useful.
