Dr. Francis Collins, who with his colleagues at the University of Michigan in 1989, discovered the defective gene that causes cystic fibrosis, is named to run the vast research agency, The National Institute of Health (NIH) (30 billion dollars in research funds)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services and is the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and health-related research.

In July of 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Dr. Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., to be the Director of the NIH.
